Maya wearing the Kumfy Koatz

As an appreciation for our running of the Super Dog Sunday to benefit the Petfinder Foundation, Maya was given a Kumfy Koatz to try and review. Kumfy Koatz is a dog harness that has an ice or heat pack insert so that you dog can maintain optimum body temperatures in extreme weather. What does this mean? It means your dog can play in the snow longer when the insert is heated or your dog can play in the summer sun longer when the insert is frozen.

We found this product especially interesting for pet car travel. We never recommend you leave your dog in the car so we thought the product would be better for a road trip. For example, let’s say the a/c in your car doesn’t get to the back cargo area as well as it gets to those passengers riding in the front. If your road trip is in summer, perhaps the Kumfy Koatz can help keep your pet cool without the other passengers being blasted with ice cold air. The same logic can be applied to winter travel. Please note, however, that the heating or cooling will only be effective for about an hour.

But using the Kumfy Koatz for car travel is not the only use. My dog Maya got to try hers outside in the snow. Some of these photos are from the snow we had a week or two ago where we only had one inch. And some of these photos are from our huge snow storm yesterday. We got nearly a foot of fluffy white snow!

Maya is a Labrador and Labradors tend to have thick skin which helps keep them warm in cool weather so Maya seldom ever gets cold, especially since she is mostly an indoor dog in winter. For Maya, this product would be more beneficial to use in hot weather. While she is still mostly an indoor dog, she loves to play outdoors and will play and play no matter how hot or tired she gets. With the Kumfy Koatz dog harness, Maya will be able to hang out at the dog park for a much longer period.

Every dog is different. Just because Maya would use this product better in the summer doesn’t mean this product wouldn’t be great for another dog in winter. My sister has a medium-sized dog with really short hair and thin skin who would really love to wear the Kumfy Koatz in winter.

Overall, we really liked this product. It is well made and the large size fit Maya perfectly. The insert is a non-toxic gel-pack that can be put in the microwave or the freezer. And it is reusable. The gel-pack is easy to remove and to insert into harness. It was probably the easiest harness to put on and adjust… easier than putting on Maya’s dog car harness.

But I do have one criticism about the product – The weight of the insert made the harness sag at the bottom underneath Maya’s chest. Even when I fit the harness perfectly, it still sagged a little. And the more Maya moved, the more it sagged and had to be readjusted. Perhaps if the insert is frozen for warm weather use, the gel-pack insert will be stiffer and will somewhat prevent this problem. We won’t really know until we get to try it out next season.

We were given a free product to review but we are not being paid for this review. Our review is 100% our own opinion. The only thing we are required to put in this review as an exchange for the free product is the following paragraph:

“The outside layer of fabric on the Kumfy Koatz warming and cooling harnesses has recently been changed to a mesh fabric, available in numerous colors. Other than the fabric change, the product remains the same. The Kumfy Pax pouch slides easily into its pocket in the chest of the harness to help your dog’s inner core organs warm or cool as needed. Your dog can now spend more time outdoors in Winter cold or Summer heat. To learn more, follow the Kumfy Tailz Facebook page, follow on Twitter, or visit their website to see the new fabrics. Our giveaway will offer a neoprene version of the Kumfy Koatz to one lucky winner. If you prefer a sure thing to an entry, simply visit the website to select and order your preference of color in the mesh fabric.”

Colors available are red, black, and blue but color choices of the winner are limited.

  1. Holly:

What a neat product! I think warming it and using it on my beagle puppy, Bru, would definitely help in the winter time. He’s around 35 lbs and loves playing and running around in the snow, but does start shivering after a while. This could help keep him warm as he plays! I wonder if he’d love it in the Summer, too?! Great idea!

  2. katie mitchell:

I like that it keeps dogs warm in the winter and cool in the summer

  3. Trish B.:

I love that this product can be used cold or warm. This would be perfect for my rescued Bulldogs in the summer and to use on my senior rescued dogs in the winter. Thank you for this awesome giveaway!

  4. Margot C:

I think this is the most marvelous design (summer and winter comfort and care). On the site I read that “The Kumfy Pax pouch covers the dog’s chest and abdominal area or the “core.” The core is where most of the dog’s vasculature and major organs are.” That makes total sense to me.

  5. deanna:

like: their team uses the products themselves, every day, on their dogs.

  6. G:

I love that it can be used for Both keeping dogs warm and cool. I have eight dogs, three are rescues but If I won this it would be for my oldest sheltie. She loves the cold but I’d prefer her to wear something like this to keep warm and it would be great when its warm to keep her cool as she always goes with me in the car. She loves her rides and would enjoy this harness that would cool her off while waiting on the ac to cool down…. I reall like products like this. Thank you.

  7. KateV:

I love that this harness has so many potential uses. I would love to try one especially for it’s cooling properties. Shiloh loves agility, and this would help us practice a bit more in the summer when I would otherwise have to cut our practices short. It would also be great after a run at outdoor trials. ~ My older dog Cheyenne doesn’t do agility, but is much more sensitive to extreme temperatures than Shiloh. She’d love to try this harness too!

  8. Danielle Murgia:

I like that it can be used in the winter or in the summer. Most items are only good for one season. This is versatile and will be used all year long.

  9. Lisa F.:

I like that it is puncture resistant. Learned the warming/cooling effect lasts an hour.

  10. snoopy@snoopysdogblog:

I wouldn’t need this in the winter, but it gets super hot here in the summer and that would be cool!!

    Hope you’re having a fun day 🙂

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  11. Maggie:

This would be perfect for Maggie in the Summer. She’s really good in the winter, however she will play and play in the Summer heat and I know its a little to much for her, so something to keep cool would be terrific. I wish I had this when we were in Hong Kong.

  12. Flea:

I think it’s brilliant that the device is worn where the dog has the least hair and is most susceptible to cold. But the sagging would definitely be an issue. Very cool concept, though. Especially brushing the underside of the dog through snow.

I saw a similarly minded product at the Global Pet Expo, in the form of a plastic collar. Fill with water and freeze, then clip onto the dog. Or hot water in winter. The beauty of it is that the water can be poured into the drinking bowl once it’s room temperature, meaning you carry the dog’s drinking water around its neck on walks!

  13. shilohsmom:

I like it for summer use. Shiloh doesn’t tolerate heat well, so we have to limit our outings in the summer. This could help us get out more. I also like the idea of wearing it in the car. I keep the a/c on high for him while I freeze up front, but even on high it’s still not as cold as he’d like it back there.

  14. Theresa Spaid:

My dog Kita is so cold outside in the winter and this would keep her warm

  15. Cheryl Chervitz:

This is a great product. I would love to have one for my Boston Terrier who loves to play in the snow and run in the summer.

  16. Barbi:

This is great! Our puppy is long haired and our other dog is very thin and short haired. I know it is going to be hard to find activities both of them can do outside in the winter/summer. I love that I can use this for both extremes.

  17. sandy weinstein:

i like that you can use it for either cold or hot weather. it is like a cold pack, it hits the dog in the right place to benefit the dog. i like that you can stick it in the microwave to warm up. and it has a cover to keep from being too hot or cold against the dog’s skin

  18. sandy weinstein:

the kumfy tails twitter is not working right, i click on it, i already know i am following it and it states differently but when i log on to twitter it states that i am following it. maybe something is wrong w/ the rafflecopter

  19. Claudia:

i love that it would keep YoYo my little Min-Pin warm during Winter ( no more struggle going ‘Potty’ when its cold 🙂 and cool in the Summer as he overheats fairly easy with his black fur and that it would be safe for him to wear – no burns or frost bites –

  20. SephiAndMaya:

Sandy Weinstein, perhaps the rafflecopter is not working right or perhaps you don’t have your twitter account open in the same browser as this blog post. I will look at the entries and make sure you have that additional entry made. Thanks for letting me know! 🙂

  21. Heather Bridson:

I love this product! I have pugs that have a hard time breathing when its hot, this would help keep them cool!

  22. Daraya:

I love that you can use it in any type of weather – hot or cold! 🙂
