When we started this pet travel photo contest, our intent was to select one photo winner. But there were so many great photos of pets on vacation that we couldn’t pick just one. So we picked three! All three of our winners received $25.

The first winner is Trina and her dog Maggie. While this photo was taken across the ocean in Tuscany. Maggie is currently in New York with a trip planned across the seas again in the spring. Here is what Maggie had to say about her photo:

“This was my favorite vacation. We drove from Geneva Switzerland to our vacation villa in Tuscany. It was absolutely dog bliss! I already know what you’re thinking, and yes I did have my harness seatbelt on for the road trip. The owner had two dogs, and was really happy to see me. She let me roam the grounds, swim in the pool, sniff out her house and even sneaked me a treat or two.
Here I am in from of the villa after a day walking through the lavender fields.
We are lucky dogs, that we get to travel.

The second winner is Dirk and his three dogs. Mickey and Marley are in the winning photo on a boat. Dirk’s other dog is a Staffordshire Terrier named Mandy. We are sharing her picture too. We love the Petz On Board sign that Dirk has in his vehicle and bought one for ourselves.

Dirk has a holiday house along the river where his dogs love to swim and be on the boat with their ears flapping in the wind. Dirk says, “This was taken about a year ago. My two female dogs (the snowfox (marley), and the staffy (mandy) was adopted from our local animal welfare and at first they were very scared of the water and the boat, but slowly but surely they built confidence and today they own the boat and the water. The daschund has been babied by my girlfriend since he was a pup and thinks he is a german shepard and the pack leader! The staffy (mandy) likes to sit on the back seat putting out the vibe watching the birds flying over her head.”

The third winner is Cynthia and her dog Jack. Jack is a yellow Labrador and white Shepherd cross. He’s as light colored as our Maya. Here is what Cynthia has to say about her photo of Jack:

“This photo is of my dog, Jack, in my significant other’s parents’ backyard in GORGEOUS Miami, FL. We went on vacation there in January of this year. It was a long drive but Jack was a good boy both on the way there and on the way back. He loves to go bye-bye and this was his biggest bye-bye ever! In Miami, he especially enjoyed chasing little lizards and baby iguanas. Up here in Northern Indiana, the only thing he can chase is squirrels, so this was a treat! He also went swimming in the Ocean for the first time. My SO’s parents treated him like he was their own, and he sucked up all of the attention. They even let him lay on their “guest” couch, which even the resident dog isn’t allowed on! Jack also got to taste authentic Cuban food with me, but only a little bit. All in all, it was the. best. vacation. ever!”

Thanks, Cynthia! Get back in touch with us for your prize. I’m sure Jack would love for you to buy him some biscuits and toys. 🙂

Thank you to all who entered! On Wednesday, November 7th, we will begin another contest. The prize for the next contest is for the seat/couch cover below. This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer so this is the only one left. The winner for the very last one ever will be chosen at random on November 30th. Come visit us again on Wednesday for the contest details.

Pet Auto Safety had a fantastic time this Sunday at the Dogtoberfest in Lawrence, Kansas. The event was huge and there were lots of activities. I tried to get as many photos as I could of the different events, but I was stuck at my own booth most of the time. So I asked Jim Sovanski with Sovanski Photography, who also had a booth at the event, to share some of his photos. As you can tell, his photos came out much better than mine. 🙂

This is a photo I took to show how crowded it was at Dogtoberfest despite the chilly weather. The Greyhound Rescue was right next to us.

This is the photo I took of the huge Irish Wolfhound. You can see how amateur the photo is by my shadow. That’s the Wolfhound’s friend the Corgi in the back and part of my Maya in the bottom right corner.

Compare my photo to this much better photo by Jim Sovanski. The Irish Wolfhound’s name is Quinn.

Here is a woman and her Dachshund sitting down and enjoying an event at the Dogtoberfest. They could be watching the stage where there were costume contests and other pet contests, they could be watching the dogs in the agility course, or they could be watching the disc dogs in action.

Here is an adorable dog dressed up for Dogtoberfest.

We had a tax man come by to make sure we had our sales tax permit. This dog is checking him out to make sure he dotted his i’s and crossed his t’s.

A beautiful Border Collie in front of Jim Sovanski’s booth. 🙂

If you like Jim Sovanski Photography, he does digitial paintings as well. Look how beautiful this dog digital painting is.

Young’s Pool in Overland Park, Kansas had a day for dogs on August 18th. Maya went last year and loved it so I thought I would take her again. (Pierson didn’t get to go because he doesn’t get along well with other dogs.)

Maya, bottom right, waiting for me to throw the tennis ball. Lots of other dogs in the background having a good time.

Maya loves fetching tennis balls from the pool.

Maya’s coming back with her ball while another dog is going in to get a toy.

Lots of dogs having a good time at Young’s Pool.

Some public pools have a day for dogs at the end of the season just before the drain the pool. Check with the parks & recreation in your neighborhood to see if there are any such events in your area. Remember, wherever you go, travel safe.

At the Pawsh Wash then U-Wash-Puppy for Suds of Fun

The dogs don’t like bath time any more than I do. But when they get stinky, too bad. Rather than give them a bath at home and clog my drains, I take my dogs to a self-wash-your-dog place. The one in Lawrence, KS is Pawsh Wash. Here is Maya making the best of it.

Before Maya gets her bath, she plays with Hercules and Bean.

Maya likes the towel-drying part the most.

When I lived in Overland Park, KS, I took Sephi and Maya to U-Wash-Puppy. So when I found out U-Wash-Puppy was going to have an event called Suds of Fun to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, I signed up to have a booth to sell some of my dog car harnesses from The event was held this Sunday. I was going to take Pierson to get his bath but it was over 100 degrees that day. So I just took pictures of other people washing their dogs.

Lots of people & dogs visiting the Suds of Fun event at U-Wash-Puppy.

This is Lady. She runs the place. Right now she is begging for some goodies.

Bath time is easier but still no fun.

After the bath, it is time for the blow drying.

This is our new friend Porter who helped his family establish Porter’s Pet Pantry.

Local St. Patrick’s Day Parade

St. Patrick's Day Clothes for Dogs

St. Patrick's Day Clothes for Dogs

No pet travel stuff today, just St. Patrick’s Day fun. We are participating in a parade today in Lawrence, Kansas. It is not a grand parade like in some bigger cities, but it is nice. Dogs will be in the parade too. I won’t be taking Maya or Pierson. Maya will be too excited with all the people around and so will be difficult to control. Pierson will be too scared of all the people and noises. (These are some good things to think about if you plan on taking your dog to a St. Patrick’s Day parade.)

My part in the parade is to assist the person wearing a dog costume. This person is promoting The Dog House, a local co-op pet shop located in Lawrence, Kansas. The Dog House sells mostly hand-crafted and homemade pet items such as pet apparel, dog beds, dog treats, and more. Other people in the parade will be walking their dogs and their dogs will be wearing St. Patrick’s Day clothes for dogs from The Dog House. The photo above is of a dog wearing such apparel. I hope to have more pictures of the parade later today.

If you are in the area of Lawrence, Kansas, come check out the parade, and The Dog House too. And have a happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Okay, I’m back with more photos from the parade!

Here is Roxy in her St. Patrick’s Parade clothes for dogs.

Here is another dog wearing green and some kids having a good time watching the parade.

Here are all the people watching the parade!

Dogs are amazing. Not only do they make our lives better by giving us unconditional love, they eagerly and loyally serve our country, contribute to law enforcement, provide therapy and guidance for special needs, assist in search and rescue, and more.

The American Humane Association is honoring these incredible animals with the Hero Dog Awards. You can watch this powerful celebration on the Hallmark Channel on Friday, November 11th at 8/7 central.

Eight remarkable dogs will be honored for their bravery and devotion in eight different service categories. These categories are military, guide, therapy, law enforcement, search and rescue, service, hearing, and an emerging hero award for an ordinary dog who accomplished a courageous feat.

On August 13th, 2011, we participated in a pet event called Tails on the Trails at Ad Astra Park & Pool in Lenexa, Kansas.  It was a beautiful Saturday morning and afternoon.  There weren’t as many vendors or as many visitors this year as compared to last, but it was still a fun and successful event.

We had a table there to sell our pet auto safety products, but there were lots of other things going on besides pet vendors selling products.  The part which my dog Maya liked best was the swimming in the pool.  Yep, that’s right, dogs got to swim in the public pool for the day!

At about 11:00, the Tails on the Trails event hosted pet contests.  Visitors to the event got to enter their dogs in contests such as biggest dog, smallest dog, best trick, best kisser, and so on.  I entered Maya in the best trick contest.  She did her little turn-around trick on four legs and the same trick on her two hind legs.  I couldn’t get her to do the one on her two hind legs as well as she does it at home (probably the distraction of all the people and dogs), but she did okay and got third place.  First and second places went to dogs who did multiple tricks in a row.  All the participants did a great job!

At about 12:30 there was a pet parade.  The parade consisted of owners and their dogs walking around the park.  It wasn’t too exciting but it was good exercise.  I let my friend walk Maya in the parade.

After that, the local police officers did a demonstration with their police dogs (see photo above).  Their dogs are Belgian Malinois dog breeds and they are super smart and very well-behaved.  One dog demonstrated the finding of drugs and another one of the dogs demonstrated taking down a suspect (pictured below).

The very last thing of the day was the dock diving practice for the Lenexa k-9 team.  There are national competitions for dock diving dogs and they need to get their practice somewhere.  I had to tend my booth so I was unable to watch.

There are all sorts of pet events all over the country.  Most benefit a pet organization.  If you didn’t make it to this pet event, check your local animal shelter and rescue group organizations for other events.

We are part of another pet event on September 17th at Gage Park in Topeka, Kansas, called the Paws in the Park.  And another event on October 8th at Southpark in Lawrence, Kansas, called Dogtoberfest.  We hope to see you there!
